Serious Sam 4 is a great example of an enjoyable, great game. it delivers exactly what you'd wish for: old-school fun with fast-paced, no-nonsense shooting from the very first wave. From the first moments you're thrown into an arena filled with enemies, blasting through hordes with an arsenal that feels brutal and satisfying and mostly a bit over the top. The high enemy density feels correct and sometimes overwhelming in a good way. there’s rarely a moment to catch your breath, which is exactly part of the charm.
In the "battlefield" you're met with screaming enemies and campy voice lines that never take themselves too seriously. Whether it’s your own allies shouting commands or monsters making absurd noises, the audio adds to the whole vibe of the game. The story leans into that same tone, with a goofy narrative that feels like a loving parody of every action cliché wrapped into one absurd package. It won’t win awards for plot complexity, but it does deliver good laughs along the way.
The enemy types fit perfectly and feel misplaced at the same time, bit bulls storming at you, skeleton goat looking thing galloping at you, big green lizard men, they're all unique in their own sense.
Boss encounters are over-the-top spectacles, but never too tricky. Also thanks to the pretty generous checkpoint system. The gory death animations add a Doom-like aspect to the game. In my opinion Serious Sam 4 is just pure, unfiltered arcade-y chaos, and that’s precisely why it’s a blast.
